Shake Out. Don’t Freak Out.

Here is a direct quote from Barb Shelley, Public Relations - Communications Specialist
Corporate Communications and Minerals Processing:

"While Utah has not had a major earthquake in the last 350 years, FLSmidth values its employees and does its part to be current on all safety and preparedness issues surrounding natural disasters. We were one of 400 Utah businesses and nearly 1 million people who participated in a state-wide earthquake safety drill yesterday. After practicing Drop, Cover, and Hold on, the internationally recommended safety procedure, our employees gathered in groups to discuss what they have learned about earthquake preparedness. We have employees from more than 30 countries working out of three facilities in Utah so the exercise was invaluable to help everyone get current about earthquake safety."

I appreciated the hard work that Barb Shelley put into the earthquake preparedness drill. I was taught as a child that if an earthquake hits, you're supposed to run to a doorway and stand underneath as you hold on. I was informed by Barb that this would be the last place you want to be during an earthquake. For one, not everyone would be able to fit underneath the doorways during an earthquake, and it wouldn't be safe at all. Secondly, the fastest way to protect yourself, is to get underneath your desk, cover your neck/head and hold on the best you can. I'm so grateful that I have this knowledge know and because I practised getting under my desk, I will be prepared if ever there is an emergency. Thanks to FLSmidth and Barb Shelley, I feel more confident now that I have experienced the FLSmidth earthquake safety drill.

Spring Fling at FLSmidth

FLSmidth has a tradition of an annual Spring Fling and this year was no different. Many tables were set up outside, in between the FLSmidth main building and the Technology Center in Midvale, Utah. It was a crisp, sunny day, perfect for eating good food and talking with co-worker friends. The menu consisted of lasagna, or cheese ravioli, salad, bread sticks, juice/water, and ice cream sandwiches. Are you jealous? You should be, it was delicious!

Lasagna

Amelia Hawkes and I, we were excited about Lasagna

The line was long for the scrumptious delights, but well worth it. I love the FLSmidth monthly activities, not just for the food and outdoors (which are wonderful in themselves), but the perfect opportunities to befriend your co-workers and get to know one another. It builds commoradory, and a foundation of openness between co-workers and supervisors. It was a lovely afternoon.

FLSmidth 1st Annual Employee 5K Fun Run/Walk

FLSmidth in Midvale, Utah had its 1st Annual Employee 5K Fun Run/Walk. It was a bright Spring day as only Midvale, Utah has. It was also a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow co-workers. The employees enjoyed energy snacks, water and juice while we laughed and talked with excitement. After everyone had stretched, and ran in place to warm up, the runners took to the starting line.

Our view from the back of the race.

Runners were the first to start the race, and those walking began about 30 minutes after them. The sound of the horn signals the beginning of the race and the FLSmidth employees/runners begin their journey down the Jordan River Walk Way. Then the walkers followed afterward.

Barb Shelley - Public Relations, and me

As Barb Shelley and I were passed by all the running and walking FLSmidth employees, we made sure to say "good job" or "you're doing great!" Everyone responded with smiles, and a thank you. FLSmidth has a Wellness program that promotes healthy eating and exercise for its employees. For the results of the top 5 runners and top 5 walkers, view the Corporate Wellness site at: http://slc-sp01/Wellness/default.aspx

Thank you FLSmidth Wellness Committee. I'm glad I participated in the FLSmidth 1st Annual Employee 5K Fun Run/Walk. I got acquainted with many of my co-workers better, I felt great afterward, and the scenery was beautiful.

FLSmidth Ski Day

I was nervous, and excited at the same time.

On Saturday, March 3, 2012 FLSmidth had a Ski Day that Benefit Multiple Sclerosis. Employees of FLSmidth, their families, and friends were able to enjoy a fun filled day of skiing, talking with fellow co-workers, enjoying wonder soup and chili, and making new friends.

I'm from the Mid-South, where there's not too many mountains. Mostly, the FLSmidth Ski Day for me involved falling down the mountain, and I loved every minute of it. The scenery in Utah, and the opportunity to give back was well worth it. When we purchased our lift tickets, the proceeds went to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Utah. It was also a wonderful opportunity to get to know other FLSmidth employees.

One of the few times I didn't fall where I was able to enjoy the view.
